A winter warmth hub for over-55s is set to open in Workington.

On the corner of Pow Street, the centre will be run by Age UK and will offer free services and resource packs from Monday November 21 until the end of January.

People who meet the criteria will be able to access home heating resource packs, as well as thermals and non-trip slippers. Anyone can also get free advice on benefits and home efficiency measures.

Free to access services will also include home checks, PAT testing of electrical heating equipment and also short talks and advice sessions about saving money this winter. Other organisations will also be regularly in attendance including Cumbria Action for Sustainability and Allerdale council.

Jane Mindar, of Age UK, said: ” For many older people, there is a sense of unease about the upcoming winter. Primarily we want to help people be positive and proactive in getting the assistance that they need.

“We at Age UK West Cumbria know that older people often fall to the back of the queue when it comes to getting the right help, so this is an additional form of help to local warm spots.

“We hope that it will be a welcoming and positive place for people to come and get better connected to support. There will be food and drinks available for people to come in and feel welcomed and comfortable.”

The hub will be next to British Heart Foundation’s furniture store on Pow Street. It will open on weekdays from 10am to 3pm. A number of shorter-term pop-up support hubs will also be happening in surrounding towns in coming months offering similar services, Age UK said.
