A collision earlier this morning blocked the A591 – but also left a police car in a tricky situation.

The incident, near the church, was reported at around 8.05am and police said there was heavy traffic in the area.

A police car responding to the incident ended up on its side.

A police spokesman said: “Police were called at 7:17am to the report of a single vehicle collision involving a wagon. The collision occurred on the A591 on the Lake road between Thirlmere and Grasmere.

“Following the initially report, a further three vehicles were involved in isolated collisions at the same section of road within a short period of time.

There were no reported injuries.

“One of the vehicles involved in the subsequent incidents was a police car responding to the call to attend the scene.

“Multi-agency investigations have highlighted that the section of road may have been icy this morning due to excess water from a burst pipe.”
