New direction for Lake District eatery as rising costs bite

Marisol and Chris Kidd

A popular Lake District Mexican eatery is changing its business model due to rising costs.

The owners of Tacos Del Sol said they were not prepared to pass on rising costs to their customers, despite still being number one on travel website TripAdvisor.

Chris and Marisol Kidd opened the traditional Mexican take-away in March and it has become very popular thanks to chef Marisol’s prowess in the kitchen.

But the pair said that their electricity bill had doubled – costing them more than their rent – and prices for ingredients had also risen.

So the couple plan to transform Tacos Del Sol into a craft bar, selling Marisol’s unique handmade jewellery, which she sells as Urban Organic Jewelry. And they hope to showcase work from other local artists too.

Chris said: “We’ll still offer coffee, Mexican desserts, freshly made tortilla chips, salsa and hummus but our burritos, nachos and tacos will be off the menu until at least spring. We so also have a fully licensed bar too so will continue to offer craft beer.

“We are confident we will be back next spring, but as a local small business, we are not prepared to stick in while costs are so high and are not prepared to increase our prices to make it difficult for our customers to buy from us.

“I really believe that the footfall is getting very low now. It is impossible to predict if you’re going to have a busy day or a quiet one especially what to buy in as we don’t believe in wasting food.”
