A Carlisle College tutor has been awarded a lifetime achievement award for his dedication to his subject.
Matty McLeish has been a plastering tutor for 17 years and judges of the FIS and Worshipful Company of Plaisterers Training Awards praised his commitment to the trade, both locally and nationally.
The awards recognise outstanding apprentices, students, individuals and organisations who have made a lasting contribution to training and development in the plastering and interior trades.
The award recognises that he is widely seen as an outstanding tutor who makes an extraordinary contribution to the local community, said Carlisle College.
A spokesman added: “He works among diverse groups, approaches challenges head on and leads by example, offering advice to anyone who needs it, be it work-related or personal. Many apprentices and full-time learners taught by Matty have gone on to be competent plasterers, some now owning their own business.”
Lisa Boyd, of careers organisation Inspira, added: “Matty is a calm, dependable man who has a significant impact through his nurturing ways. His joy in his work is infectious.
“All the young people I have supported onto his course have enjoyed the experience. Some have left with qualifications they never believed possible. Overall, Matty is an outstanding tutor, role model and colleague.”

But this wasn’t the only achievement for the McLeish family. Carlisle College joinery student Matty McLeish Jnr, who trains at Dragon’s Gym Carlisle, was crowned Northern Champion for Muay Thai boxing in the same week.
Matty Snr said: “I was extremely honoured to receive my award but watching my son winning his belt made me even prouder!”
