Plans for an £85,000 park are in the pipeline for Carlisle.
Government cash is available to transform a large field between Petteril Bank Road and Carliol Drive play area into a park.
Owned by the city council, it is already popular with dog walkers and the authority said turning it into a public open space would help to strengthen a mile-long corridor of green space by the River Petteril between Carliol Drive and London Road, plus link the centre of Carlisle with villages to the south and east.
People are invited to share their opinions about the proposal.
Using the funding, Carlisle City Council wants to create a new public green space including:
- Formalising public access with a new path running through the site.
- Create an area of regularly mown amenity grassland suitable for informal play, exercise and games.
- Retain and enhance areas of meadow grass to support pollinating insects.
- Plant a range of additional trees, shrubs and hedges around the site to provide character and benefit birds and other wildlife.
Councillor Nigel Christian, portfolio holder for environment and transport, said: “The funding available includes some conditions relating to what use it can be put to, including a significant sum for tree planting, and must be used before summer 2023.
“We are therefore consulting on a proposal to provide a formal footpath link across the site; create areas of frequently cut grass for recreational use; allow areas to grow longer and become hay meadows; and plant trees and shrubs to benefit wildlife and improve the visual appearance of the area. Please take up the opportunity to have your say.”
The grant is from the Government’s Parks Levelling Up Fund.
