Many ambulance workers are taking part in industrial strike action today, so there will be fewer ambulances on the roads in Cumbria.
Health bosses have warned that patient safety cannot be guaranteed during the strike, but NHS England says emergency care will continue to be provided.
Ambulances will still be available to respond, although they will be prioritised for life-threatening injuries and illnesses.
Typical emergencies include:
- Cardiac arrest
- Loss of consciousness
- Fits that aren’t stopping
- Breathing difficulties
- Severe bleeding
- Allergic reactions
- Serious head injuries
Patients whose conditions are not life-threatening are unlikely to get an ambulance today and are asked to use 111.nhs.uk, their GP or local pharmacy for help with non-urgent health concerns.
About 750 armed forces staff are being drafted in to cover the walkouts, however their role will be limited. They will not be sent on call-outs involving critical care, nor will they provide any clinical care.
Ambulance workers are asking for a pay rise above inflation – although a precise figure has not been revealed.
Union representatives met with the Government yesterday but there were no discussions around pay – only what care would still be provided during the strike.
