A popular country house hotel is on the market for £995,000 as its owners say it is time for them to be the other side of the bar.

Richard and Niki Langley have run the Brantwood Country House Hotel, in Stainton, since 2007.

In that time, they have completely overhauled the venue and Richard said: “The business is at its strongest and there’s a fantastic team in place.

“We’ve achieved what we set out to do. We’ve refurbished it and we feel if we carry on, we’ll just be reinventing what we’ve already done.”

Niki, who also owns Beckstones Art Gallery in Greystoke Gill with her sister, added: “It’s time for someone else to come in and develop the hotel for its next 20 years.”

Richard said: “It’s an institution in itself and it will be nice for someone else to take on that mantle.”

The hotel employs 30 staff and the couple paid tribute to their hard work and dedication.

Richard, 56, said: “We have a fantastic team and long-serving members of staff – for example our chef has been with us for 35 years.

“We all know 98 per cent of our customers by name and what they drink – so it’s waiting for them on the bar as they come in. We will miss the customers and the team.”

However, Niki, 59, said selling the hotel would give them a more regular life and allow them to spend time with their grandchildren. She added: “We want to be on the other side of the bar!”

The couple plan to continue living in the village, which they called wonderful, and Richard said he would be looking for a new project.

The 18th century main building is thought to be around 160 years old with sympathetic recent additions and was previously a private residence and a Quaker meeting house.

It has seven en suite bedrooms and sits within over half an acre of landscaped grounds, plus has a large private car park.

A second building is currently being used as a manager’s residence.

The bar has been newly renovated and the venue also has a breakfast/meeting room with 30 covers and a restaurant with over 120 covers.

The Brantwood Hotel is being marketed by Lakes Estates, which said: “The hotel offers an outstanding opportunity to acquire a highly successful, high quality hotel asset in an excellent tourist location. Future bookings are looking extremely strong for 2023. The sale of the Brantwood Country Hotel offers the opportunity to acquire a well-established and popular hotel and restaurant business.”
