One of Workington’s main rivals in the NPL West have given permission for a striker to appear in the latest series of Love Island.
Tom Clare has played 20 times this season and scored eight goals, but he hasn’t played since early December in a 1-1 draw at Colne. Last season he was the Silkmen’s top scorer with 23 goals.
Clare, who is 6ft 5in, signed for Macclesfield from Pontefract, and has also been on the books at Barnsley and Bradford City.
The latest series of Love Island, which will see contestants search for love in a South African villa, will begin later this month.
A club statement read: “Tom approached us with the request a number of weeks ago and we were happy to show the same loyalty that he has to us since becoming one of our first ever signings back in 2021.
“Despite the fact that we are disappointed to lose a player of Tom’s calibre for the foreseeable future, we also recognise the incredible opportunity that this represents for both him and his family on a personal level.
“Tom remains very much part of our plans here at the Leasing.com Stadium and has expressed his unwavering desire to return to the club after the show.
“We wish Tom every success and look forward to welcoming him back to the club in due course.”
Clare, who is 6’5″, signed for Macclesfield from Pontefract, and has also been on the books at Barnsley and Bradford City.
Clare, 23, has big ambitions for his time in the villa, where he says he will be “playing the field”.
In his promo video, he says: “Since my ex-girlfriend, no-one’s really come to me and I’ve thought, ‘wow’. Until I have that, I’m not really going to settle for less.
“Not in a bad way, but the next person I get with, I want to marry.”
