Workington Town coach Anthony Murray has named experienced prop forward Stevie Scholey as club captain for the 2023 season.
Murray said: ‘Stevie been a long time servant for the club and always represents Town with nothing but passion and effort and will lead by example with his performances on the field.
“He is a fine representative of Cumbrian RL and thoroughly deserved his county call up. He brings a wealth of experience to the squad and he will help our younger players on their journey as professional players.”
Murray has also named Matty Henson as the vice-captain for the new campaign.
On that appointment Murray said: ‘Matty has been a consistent performer for Town ever since arriving from the community game and whatever position he plays he always gives 100 per cent.
“He is one of the fittest at the club and trains the house down, putting his heart and soul into what he does and leads by example in training and is a fantastic professional.”
Henson scored the winning try in last season’s Ike Southward Memorial Trophy game at Derwent Park and Town go to Whitehaven tomorrow looking to retain the silverware.
Murray added: “We have a good leadership group at the club and the captains will be supported by the very experienced Carl Forber and Jason Mossop who I’m sure will assist our captains as and when required and reiterate team and club principles.
“This will be very important as they help the rest of the group in reaching the team’s full potential.”
At the Ike Southward game, there will be a bucket collection organised by the Hensingham club in memory of 18-year-old Logan Holgate who died earlier in the week.
