Barrow pulls out all the stops for African charity and local community

Barrow have been reflecting on their efforts over the recent EFL Week of Action when member clubs get involved to better their communities.

Launched in 2017, the EFL Week of Action sees clubs and CCOs from across the EFL’s three divisions showcase some of the most impactful community projects with managers and players joining participants across the country.

Volunteer Zambia is a unique international sport programme run by the Wallace Group – a collaboration between leading UK sports universities – to primarily support and work with the leading Zambian sports NGO, Sport in Action.

Barrow hosted a collection point for footballs, boots, strips, training kit, cones, whistles, bibs and reported that the Project Zambia volunteers drove away with a vehicle full of equipment that will go to great use for their charity mission.

Bluebirds assistant manager Adam Temple hosted a coaching session for a group of local kids at the SO Legal Stadium and it was something the Barrow number two was really happy with.

“It was great to give the local community a taste of a session with a professional EFL coaching team,” said Temple.

“It gave the kids a little flavour of what life is like as a Barrow player.

“Our manager Pete Wild said at the start of the season he wanted the staff and players to be front facing to the community, and I hope this session has done that and had a positive impact.”

The club hosted a competition for local schoolchildren to design the front cover for Saturday’s match. The winner also won a mascot experience and will get to walk out of the tunnel with one of the Barrow XI.

Two of the players Josh Gordon and Billy Waters visited Our Lady of the Rosary in Dalton to share their footballing experiences and life/career advice with the pupils.

They fielded questions from the youngsters, and Waters even demonstrated his musical skills!

A Barrow spokesman said: “We asked our club partners to nominate those who truly make a difference in the community, and as a reward, those chosen received tickets to a Bluebirds home game, along with other goodies.”
