34 goals in five games for Workington and District Sunday League

Workington Sunday League operates with fewer teams these days – but the goal-count per game shows no sign of declining.

Five games produced 34 goals in the latest round of fixtures which included three in Cup competitions.

Tightest game was at Aspatria in the League Cup where Sun Inn Athletic caused an upset with a 4-3 win over Blue Bell.

Athletic are bottom of the table while Blue Bell are second top but that form went out the window in what proved to be a seven-goal thriller.

Brad Williamson (2), Luke Day and Daniel Dobson secured the win for the Sun Inn’s second team with Tom Powell, Stuart Lace and Greg Quayle netting for the Workington side.

Two of the ties were in the President’s Cup and there were wins for Deer Orchard and Salterbeck.

Deer Orchard were in good form as they beat Sun Inn first team 6-1 at Wakefield Road with goals from Luke Graham (2), Milo Cooke, Tom McFadyen, Ben Wright and Ryan Gorley.  Mally Graham scored Sun’s consolation.

Salterbeck were almost as comfortable with their win as they beat Seaton Rangers 5-1.

Max Litt (2), Leon Wharrier, Charlie Shaw and Ewan Robinson were on target for the winners with Dan Graham notching for Seaton.

The other two games were in the League and there were victories for Dearham and Maryport Athletic.

Dearham beat Flimby 6-2 with goals from  veteran Stephen Stoddart (2), James Langstaff, Alfie Green, Danny Manchester and Jack Brown. Scott Underwood and Brandon Duncan responded for Flimby.

It was a bit tighter at Maryport where Athletic beat Senhouse Street 4-2 with goals from Cameron Carter, Callum Foy, Ciaran Laverty and Jack Burns. Ryan Moore and Ollie Dunn were the marksmen for Senhouse Street.

The County Cup dominates the programme this Sunday with four ties taking place – and three of them direct clashes between the Workington League and their Egremont counterparts.

County Sunday Cup: FC Cosmos v Salterbeck (10-30am ko); Dearham v Maryport Athletic (1-30pm ko); Northside v Moresby Rangers (1-30pm ko); Sun Inn Athletic v Lowca Pirates (1-30pm ko).

Workington Sunday League: Deer Orchard v Seaton Rangers (2pm ko); Flimby Social v Sun Inn (2pm ko).
