A man has died after he was rescued from Whitehaven harbour.

Emergency services were called at around 7.50am today, February 26, after reports from a member of the public that they had seen someone in the water

A statement from Cumbria police said: “A man was recovered from the water. He was taken to hospital but has since died.

“Enquiries are ongoing to confirm the identity of the man and how he came to be in the water.”

Police have issued a plea for information about the man, whose death is being treated as unexplained, but not suspicious.

The man has not yet been formally identified but is believed to be a local man in his 40s.

Officers are piecing together his movements and interactions with people in the early hours of the morning in the vicinity of the harbour and are keen to hear from anyone who may have spoken with him.

It is believed he was primarily in the King Street and Market Place areas and then the harbour front and marina area of Whitehaven.

He was wearing black Adidas tracksuit bottoms, a black tracksuit top and grey and orange Nike trainers. He may have been wearing sunglasses at some stage.

Officers are also keen to hear from anyone who may have CCTV and/or Ring doorbell footage which can assist officers.

Anyone with information which may help police with their enquiries is urged to get in touch, a spokesman added.

Report online at www.cumbria.police.uk/reportit quoting incident number 62 of 26 February 2023 or call 101.

Alternatively, contact Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
