FA Cup shockers Grimsby Town are next on the agenda for Carlisle United.
The Mariners visit Brunton Park on Saturday lying 16th in League Two having pulled-off one of the great Cup surprises.
The lowest-ranked team left in the fifth round and in the National League last season, handed out more embarrassment for Southampton, who are struggling to avoid the drop from the Premier League.
It’s the first time they have reached the quarter finals since 1938/39 when they went on to reach the semi-finals. This time they face a trip to another Premier League side Brighton.
The Mariners only returned to the EFL after finishing sixth in the National League last season. It was a remarkable effort to win promotion as they went to extra time in all three play-off games, They beat Notts County and Wrexham before seeing-off Solihull Moors in the final.
Grimsby are only the sixth team from the fourth tier or below to reach the quarter-finals since the introduction of the Fourth Division of the Football League in 1958-59, and only the second since 1989-90.
It is also the first time they have beaten top-flight opposition as a fourth-tier side in the FA Cup since January 1989, when they defeated Middlesbrough in the third round.
A former Carlisle United goalkeeper played in the remarkable win – New Zealander Max Crocombe who was with the Blues in the 2016-17 season. He only played four senior games when he was understudy to Mark Gillespie.
