Penrith completed a League and Cup double when they beat neighbours Upper Eden 38-5 in the final of the Cumbria County Cup at Kendal.

The game had virtually been won in the first-half when Penrith built a 26-0 lead by the break.

They went on to add the County Cup to the Regional 2 North League title they had clinched a fortnight earlier.

For Upper Eden, playing in their first Cumbria Cup final, there will be compensation by earning promotion to Regional 2 North. They need a single point from their final two games.

Charles Graves the Penrith President said: “It was a very competitive game with a lot of pressure from Upper Eden but Penrith’s defence was very strong.

“Penrith made the most of their chances and all of our youngsters did very well, proving their worth.

An estimated crowd of 1,500 watched the final – with a large contingent from Upper Eden – and the game was played in a fine spirit.

“It was a very good work-out for Upper Eden which should give them encouragement for next season,” added Graves.

Neil Marston, the Upper Eden chairman, said: “I think we lost the game in the first-half but our lads can be very proud of themselves. They all gave it everything and nobody let the sode down whatsoever.

“Penrith were organised, virtually error free and fast, especially in the outside backs. It was the perfect game plan against us.

“They were so difficult to break down and we just couldn’t get going despite trying everything we had. Credit to Penrith, they are a good team being well-coached.

“For me this doesn’t detract from what has been another awesome season and I am extremely proud of each and everyone in the squad and the club.

“The support from the local community was amazing and is greatly appreciated.”
