Wath Brow Hornets were denied a win at Lock Lane in the National Conference Premier Division when the Castleford side scored twice in the last eight minutes.
The Cumbrians looked to be heading for the two points on 72 minutes when Laim Mattinson got over the home line and Sam Curwen added the extras for a 16-6 lead.
But Lock Lane rallied and two tries, with one converted, before the end pulled them level and both sides had to settle for a point in a 16-16 draw.
Lock Lane had gone in front after 11 minutes with a try from Chris Siddons and converted by Nathan Hare.
But the Hornets were ahead 10-6 at the interval as they hit back with tries from Mattinson and Jay Weatherill, one of them converted by Curwen.
It stayed that way until the 72nd minute when Hornets seemed to have pulled nearer the win with Mattinson’s second try and Curwen’s conversion.
Then in a dramatic finish Robbie Newton crossed two minutes from time and with just seconds left Nathan Carter got over with Hare’s successful conversion the last action of the game.
Kells had won their opening game at Leigh Miners rangers two weeks ago, but they were unable to follow-up at a much tougher Thatto Heath Crusaders.
They went down 18-12, which represented a very good effort as they had been 12-0 down after half an hour. After 60 minutes they were level and looking in good shape for a follow-up win but the only try which followed came from the Crusaders.
Lewis Fairhurst, who had been on trial at Whitehaven in pre-season, had scored early on. He converted that and also one by Tom Yates to give the home side their 12-0 advantage.
Before half-time, however Harley Nelson went in for a Kells try, converted by Ross Gainford and on the hour Lewis Smith scored a second try, again converted by Gainford to put the sides level.
Unfortunately for the Cumbrians, Thatto Heath responded immediately with their third try on 63 minutes from Harvey McDaid and near the end Fairhurst put over a penalty.
In Division Two Egremont lost their second away fixture when they were beaten 22-2 at Oulton Raiders.
The Rangers had opened the scoring with a second minute penalty from Chris Tyson and it stayed that way for half an hour before the Raiders opened up an 8-2 interval lead. Bailey Metcalfe scored a try and Kieron Walpole kicked two goals.
Egremont never seriously looked like getting back into the contest as Oulton built on that advantage in the second-half with tries from Kiedon Hartley, Hal Day and Walpole, one of which was converted.
Barrow Island earned their second win out of three games in Division Two when they beat Saddleworth Rangers 28-12.
It was the visitors’ first defeat of the season and the Islanders were full value for their success after making a rip-roaring start. They were 22-0 to the good midway through the first-half and Saddleworth didn’t really look like getting back into it.
Ross Bird (2), Adam Jackson and Cameron Curtis cross for tries, three of which were improved by Jackson until Matt Whitehead scored a try and converted himself for Rangers before the interval.
It was one converted try apiece in the second-half with Jack Sutherland going over for the hosts, converted by Jackson and Jack Holden scoring for Saddleworth with Whitehead converting.
In Division Three Hensingham earned their first points with a 26-18 home win over Eastmoor Dragons.
It stemmed from a good come-back by the Cumbrians after they had trailed 12-10 at half-time.
Miller Dalton was a hero for Hensingham with a hat-trick of tries while Dan McGarry (2) and Callum Morgan also crossed. Jack Kellet kicked their only goal.
Millom were beaten 18-12 after a very closely-contested game at Oldham St. Annes. The sides had been locked together at 6-6 when they took their half-time break.
Amawaki Saumaki and Adam Kelly scored the Millom tries, both converted by Lee Postlethwaite.
