The Mayor of Carlisle chose Watchtree Nature Reserve as his final visit before the upcoming council change.

Volunteers said they were honoured to receive the historic visit from the mayor and mayoress of Carlisle Mike and Anne Mitchelson on one of their final outings as Carlisle City Council changes to the new Cumberland Council on April 1.

Coun Mitchelson said: “We have always wanted to visit the reserve and see how it has moved on from being a foot and mouth burial site and we have really enjoyed seeing the fantastic facilities they have here. We will be coming back with the grandchildren to try out the bikes!”

The couple were escorted on a tour of the facilities, including the lake and bird hides, pond viewing platform, Watchtree Wheelers followed by lunch in the café.

Watchtree director William Little added: “I have always wanted to bring the mayor of Carlisle out to Watchtree to see how it has developed as an important local community asset over the last 20 years.
