A drug-driver whose offence came to light after he pulled out in front of a police car on to a main Carlisle road has been fined and given a year’s ban.
George Moraru, 30, of Brook Street, Carlisle, was behind the wheel of a Volkswagen Scirocco when he came to the attention of an officer in the area of Eastern Way at around 9.30pm on December 29.
Moraru pulled out in front of the patrol vehicle and drove away at what a PC felt was a speed in excess of the limit.
While speaking to Moraru, the constable could smell cannabis and a roadside test proved positive. Analysis of a blood sample later showed Moraru was just over the legal driving limit for the psychoactive ingredient of the class B controlled drug.
He pleaded guilty to drug-driving and had no previous criminal offences on his record.
Duncan Campbell, giving mitigation, said Moraru was extremely sorry following his brush with the law.
“He was fully co-operative throughout with the police officer at the roadside and at the police station. Generally he is a person who takes driving seriously,” said the lawyer.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Moraru had been employed as a delivery driver although he was not presently working.
Magistrates imposed a £120 fine and 12-month driving ban.
