Windscale completed their Wearside League fixtures with two home games and picked up four points from the six available.
Durham United had visited the Falcon Complex midweek in a competitive game which saw honours even in a 1-1 draw.
After a scrappy start to the game, it was Durham who offered the first shot on goal by either team, the effort drifting wide of the post.
The only goal of the first period was slotted home by Laurie Black for the Atoms after he was put through on goal with a pass from Matt Metcalf.
Into the second period, with Windscale looking to add to their tally, Lewis Jolly was denied by a good save from Durham keeper, Tom Glaister.
Kieran Fraser was the next to try his luck, but Glaister again prevented a score.
Durham eventually drew level from the penalty spot. Jack Gibbons, the visitors’ best player on the night, sent Atoms custodian Andrew Richardson the wrong way with a well struck shot from the 12 yard mark.
The Atoms suffered a setback when Richardson suffered an injury and was unable to continue in goal, so Ryan Byrne took his place between the sticks, producing a competent performance for the remainder of the game.
Despite a frantic end to the game, both teams were unable to make a breakthrough, and the 1-1 scoreline at the final whistle was probably reflective of the game.
Windscale hosted Shotton Colliery on Coronation Day, with perfect weather for a game of football, but it became a bit of a damp squib.
Shotton were only able to raise ten players for their trip across from the North East. Despite this they set about their task in the right manner, setting their stall out for damage limitation.
Centre back, Max Rundle delivered a solid performance in Shotton’s backline aided by keeper Max Rundle as they kept the Atoms at bay well into the first half.
Windscale eventually took the lead with a penalty as Lewis Jolly, the Atoms top goal scorer, fired the ball low into the corner of the Shotton net.
The hosts carved out two further chances, but Rundle was equal to both before the Atoms lead was doubled courtesy of an own goal.
After some good approach work, Jolly fired a ball across the face of the Shotton goal, and unfortunately for the visitors, a defender attempting to clear the ball only managed to divert it beyond Rundle into the back of the net. Windscale were able to turn round 2-0 to the good.
Despite their imbalance in numbers, it was a credit to Shotton’s ten men that they continued to be competitive.
In the warm conditions, match official Stephen Donald sensibly allowed Shotton a couple of drink breaks. However, it was Matty Pierce who popped up to register the final goal to sign off the Atoms League programme with a 3-0 victory.
Windscale’s season will come to a close on Saturday when they entertain Wearside League runners up Darlington Town in the Alan Hood Charity Cup Final. The game is scheduled for a 2:30 kick-off at the Falcon Complex.
