A rare opportunity to become the major stakeholder in a Cumbrian windfarm has come on to the market.

The eight-turbine Wharrels Hill Windfarm, near Bothel, generates enough electricity to power around 7,500 homes a year – and now the majority stake of 68.25 per cent is for sale.

It is being marketed by Savills and is available for an undisclosed sum.

The current power purchase agreement ends in September this year. Savills said: “This provides an opportunity for a purchaser with a large offsite energy demand to arrange a virtual agreement to supply their wider electricity needs with low carbon power.

“There is also scope to extend the life of the existing scheme, which expires in 2027, via an extension to the operating period under the planning permission. Alternatively, permission may be sought to repower the site with new technology turbines.”

Wharrels Hill Wind Farm project included the involvement of six local farmers to build and operate it. It began operating in 2007.

Prior to construction, the site was purchased from Npower Renewables by Wharrels Hill LLP, a group of private investors.

Oxfordshire-based FIM Services managed Wharrels Hill LLP and Wind Prospect Ltd conducted the project management during the construction phase.
