Workington Cricket Club has broken new ground this year with the formation of a girls’ and women’s team.
They held their first competitive games at the weekend as part of a mini festival against teams from Threlkeld and Cockermouth.
Workington’s newly appointed safeguarding officer Emma Thompson has been the driving force behind the new team and has been delighted by the response.
“I was able to get funding from Active Cumbria and the Allerdale local committee and although only operating since April we have got a nice number training.
“There are girls from year six through to women in their late 40s and the beauty is that they don’t have to find any gear because it is all provided by the club.
“There’s a great family and community atmosphere at the Workington club, which is inclusive to all, and the girls’/women’s team has been a great addition.
“We have players from the town as well as Dearham and Dean and anyone wishing to give cricket a go who live in the area should just come down and try it out.
“There’s actually a perfect pathway in Cumbria Cricket for girls and women to follow and there is a girl at the Workington club, 15-year-old Elsie Fox, who will be touring Sri Lanka later this year with a Cumbria team,” said Emma.
Her husband Brian is one of the age group coaches at Workington and their children all play the game.
She was very pleased with the way the first festival went as all three competing clubs won one game each in the round robin format.
Their next competitive fixture will be another festival on July 16 when Workington, Threlkeld and Cockermouth will be joined by Egremont.
