Drivers and pedestrians are urged to take care after a substance – believed to be a type of vegetable oil – has suffered a spillage in an Eden village.

A multi-agency response has been ongoing in the Langwathby area today, May 14, following a report of a substance leak in the area.

The substance – believed to be a type of vegetable oil – does not pose a health risk to the public in and of itself.

However, there are road closures in place and agencies would like to warn people walking and driving in and around the Langwathby area to take particular care as roads and pavements may be slippery.

A full road closure is in place in Back Lane and a partial road closure at Salkeld Road, in the vicinity of Langwathby Stores. There is a further closure preventing access to the village from the north via Storey Bank.

People are urged to respect road closure signs where they come across them, this is important to prevent further transfer of the substance onto the wider arterial network.

Several agencies remain in the area responding to the incident and are likely to remain in attendance for some time to come.
