Cumbria police have joined Carlisle United and Bradford City AFC in a joint message urging fans to enjoy the League Two play-off match responsibly this Saturday.
Carlisle United and Bradford City AFC are supporting the police’s message for fans to enjoy the game but not to let the emotions of the day spill into violence, disorder or any other criminal activity.
Chief Superintendent Lisa Hogan said: “We know fans will be looking forward to the second leg of the play-off game. We’re expecting a big crowd of Carlisle fans locally to attend, along with travelling supporters from Bradford.
“As with any high-profile event there will be a significant policing presence in and around Brunton Park on Saturday afternoon, with officers on hand to help ensure the safety of those attending.
“Football fixtures attract a broad range of attendees including families and children. I would urge all those attending to consider this and act responsibly.
“As would be expected, where an individual engages in unlawful behaviour, the police will step in and take proactive action.”
Nigel Clibbens, chief executive at Carlisle United, said: “Our fans have been magnificent home and away all season, travelling in numbers and supporting the club in the right way, with noise and passion.
“With this game being live on TV, and with reporters from around the world coming to cover the game, we know we’re under the spotlight, and we urge fans from both clubs to show what it means to get behind their players in a positive manner and in a game of such magnitude.
“We have said consistently that we want Brunton Park to be a welcoming place for everyone, and we want people to feel safe when they come to support their team.
“A good day with a big crowd can become a great day if we all act responsibly in the way we show that support. Let’s make this one to remember together.”
A spokesman for Bradford City AFC said “As always, we urge our fantastic supporters to enjoy the second leg responsibly on Saturday.
“You have been brilliant all season, and with close to 2,000 of you set to descend on Brunton Park, everyone at Bradford City AFC is looking forward to what we hope will be another special afternoon.
“What is paramount, however, is the safety and welfare of everyone in attendance, and that is where we urge supporters to ensure you conduct yourselves appropriately.
“After several cases of crowd disorder this season, we continue to work closely alongside the local authorities to try and ensure everyone is as safe as possible at all times.
“Please play your part as well as you can, by showing your incredible support and enjoying the game responsibly.”
