Two Lake District restaurants have joined the best places to eat in the country as they are named in the esteemed Good Food Guide for the first time.
The foodie bible features 23 Cumbrian restaurants – including for the first time Heft in High Newton and the Rothay Manor in Ambleside.
Heft’s Good Food Guide listing of very good states: ‘’There’s no doubt, though that the restaurant is the true destination here – an opening shot of Gotty’s Squeaky Cheese – sets the tone for much of what is to come – proudly Cumbrian ingredients supplied by producers the Tickles know personally, and transformed into what readers have called an ‘intensity of flavour’ that transcends the seasonal and local tags.’’
Rothay Manor has a rating of good and its entry said head chef Daniel McGeorge knew how to use high-end ingredients. It added: “But McGeorge never uses an ingredient merely to show off how clever he is. Instead, each component has been chosen with full consideration for the role it will play in the overall flavours and textures to achieve the balance that is the hallmark of good cooking, whatever the nationality.”
For over 70 years, The Good Food Guide has been the trusted source of information on where to eat across Great Britain.
Each restaurant, pub and café that’s included in the guide is assessed on its individual uniqueness, warmth, deliciousness and how strongly it would be recommended to friends and family. These then influence the overall ratings of ‘good’, ‘very good’, ‘exceptional’, or in very few cases ‘world class’.
Nicola Tickle, co-owner of Heft, said: “We are really proud that we have been listed alongside some top-notch restaurants in The Good Food Guide 2023. As a team we work hard day in and day out to deliver the best possible seasonal dining experience to our guests.
“We’ll continue to build from here and keep pushing ourselves to be the best we can possibly be. We’re all passionate about the food we create and the service we provide to our customers – for us it’s all about wanting to put Heft and High Newton firmly on the Lake District’s food map.”
Other restaurants features include L’Enclume in Cartmel – rated as ‘world class’ and the best in Great Britain – Ambleside’s Kysty, Lake Road Kitchen, Old Stamp House, Apple Pie Cafe and the Drunken Duck Inn, 1863 at Pooley Bridge, Allium at Askham Hall, Francine’s in Windermere, Henrock in Bowness, Harry’s Cafe in Low Newton, The Yan, The Jumble Room and Forest Side in Grasmere and the Black Bull in Sedbergh.
