New hounds festival launches with almost £4,000 in prize money

The Cock How Festival was a popular, annual feature in the hound trailing programme for a number of years.

Top prize money made it an attractive meeting for hound followers, but it had disappeared from the trailing scene.

However a group of enthusiasts have got together and organised a different type of competition but with almost £4,000 in prize money.

James McLelland is one of the organising committee for the new venture which starts on Monday at the meeting being held at Potter’s Park, Kirkland.

He said: “It’s going to be a trilogy – a points competition over three meetings – and through generous sponsorship we have £3,800 in prize money.

“There will be the normal prize money at the meetings selected, and then at the end of the final race the points winners over the three trails will be announced.

“We will have prizes for seniors, maidens, pups, puppy maidens, open restricted and veterans.

“At the second of the meetings at Potter’s Park there will also be a one-off trail for non-winners.

“The third meeting is being staged over the original Cock How trail and we are extremely grateful to George and Dorothy Bradley for giving us leave to race again after so many years without trailing there.”

The HTA raced on Thursday and the results were as follows:

June 15 2023 – Edges Green
