A climber in the Lake District sustained head injuries after he fell 32ft.

The man was climbing in Bram Crag Quarry on Thursday at around 7.55pm, but the rock he was using his bolt on came free and he took a tumble.

Members of Keswick Mountain Rescue Team were out on a training session but those who were not out practising their skills made their way to the quarry to help the man, followed by those who aborted the training to help.

Paramedics from the North West Ambulance Service were also on the scene quickly and the man was taken by stretcher to a waiting ambulance so he could be taken to hospital.

It was the second callout for the rescue team that day. At around 2.20pm, they were called to Catbells.

The team said: “A 68-year-old man was probably a little over-ambitious on his first major walk after recovering from a medical condition.

“Having walked over Catbells from Hawse End he was descending the Hause Gate path when his legs could do no more. The team arrived and a team doctor did an assessment before he was loaded onto a stretcher for a carry down to the road and a lift back to their vehicle with instructions to take it easy.”
