A jealous Carlisle man who punched and kicked his former partner during assaults on successive days before making chilling kill threats has been given a three-month prison sentence.
Mateusz Wisniewski, 29, had been in a relationship with the woman which had initially been good. But he became jealous and angry, wrongly believing she had been contacting other males.
She ended the relationship at the end of this year but Wisniewski didn’t take that well and began bombarding her with messages pleading for a second chance.
The woman agreed to take him back but he didn’t change. And Carlisle Crown Court heard that on February 28 he accused her of being unfaithful when she received a Facebook friend request from an unknown male.
“He grabbed hold of her, took her to the ground and punched and kicked her,” said prosecutor Kim Whittlestone. “She was scared. She managed to get away from the defendant and went upstairs to bed.”
The woman, left with bruises, found Wisniewski was still angry the next day. He was given another chance but responded by pushing her to the floor before punching and kicking her. “He threatened to kill himself if she left him, after killing her,” said Miss Whittlestone.
Evidence of his threats was found in text messages. Wisniewski admitted two common assaults and a malicious communications offence. The woman had indicated she would not co-operate with any prosecution.
But in a victim impact statement she spoke of feeling stressed, depressed and getting nervous quickly after the assaults. She spoke of everyone deserving a second chance. But, said the prosecutor: “She has concerns this defendant does not know how to treat people and that he is in need of lessons in how to treat women.”
The court heard Wisniewski, of Beaconsfield Street, Carlisle, had previous domestic violence offending against a different complainant on his record, and breaching a restraining order.
Jeff Smith, defending, said the defendant’s use of drink and drugs had been a “driver” for what happened. He had spent several weeks on remand in custody and, said Mr Smith, was “adamant that his behaviour and lifestyle will change.”
Jailing Wisniewski for three months and imposing a 10-year restraining order, Recorder Julian Shaw told him: “Your aggression and possession nature towards her was, and is, completely unacceptable.”
