Police have been cracking down on young drivers behaving anti-socially around Penrith.
More than 80 people have given the thumbs up to a post by Eden Police about the problem, as it follows complaints about the town centre increasingly being used like a racetrack at night with excessive acceleration and speed.
Police say they routinely patrol hotspot areas in Penrith for anti-social driving and also go into schools to speak to young people, but if drivers cannot be educated they will enforce.
A number of offences came to light during a pro-active operation at the weekend, officers have said, with the results as follows:
1x Driver reported for summons for driving otherwise in accordance with a licence
2x Drivers issued with Traffic Offence Reports (No MOT, No Seatbelt)
2x Drivers issued with Section 59 warnings and being prosecuted for driving without due care in hot spot car parks.
1x Driver reported to Court for excess speed and contravening solid white lines
1x Arrest in Penrith for a driver unfit through drink or drugs
2x people searched Misuse of Drugs Act (1x Positive with drugs recovered)
2x vehicles seized Section 165 for having no tax or insurance
2x arrests after drivers failed drug wipes. Both will receive compulsory driving ban if laboratory results are positive.
Separately two motorists from out of the force area have been reported to court and Issued Section 59 warnings for racing on the A686 from Melmerby to Hartside.
At least two of the drivers who have been reported to court or issued TOR’s are likely to be banned from driving when additional points are endorsed onto their licences.
Those issued with Section 59 Warnings will have their vehicles seized if they receive another warning in the next 12 months, said police.
