An inspiring Cumbrian tutor has won a national award for her work.
Claire Clarke, managing director of Aspire Tutor Services, won the Inspiring Teacher accolade at the British Dyslexia Association awards
Claire has worked in further and higher education for 18 years as a qualified lecturer and a specialist specific learning difficulty tutor and is a professional member of association,
Claire, of Wigton, is the director of Aspire Tutor Services, a not-for-profit organisation with seven specialists supporting dyslexia, specific learning difficulties, and autism spectrum, as well as mental health services, mostly online, for universities and college students throughout the country.
Claire was selected from thousands of nominations. She said: “To know that my students in higher education have gone out of their way to nominate me for this award is incredible. It means the absolute world to me.”
These are just two of hundreds of students Claire has seen over the years.
Claire said: “Students’ perseverance and determination continually amazes me, and I’m very privileged to support them on this journey, often from a place of low morale, and being failed by the system, to a place of high achievement and being proud of their own outstanding success in Higher Education and consequently in life.”
During her acceptance speech, she said she was disappointed in primary and secondary school funding and policy regarding dyslexia and neurodiverse students and higher education was the lucky end, as students are finally given a diagnosis and funding to provide study equipment and tuition and mentoring support.
