Aspatria delighted with three key signings for upcoming season

The Aspatria coaching team is delighted with what they regard as three key signings for the forthcoming season – and there is a hint that others may be in the pipeline.

In the 2021-22 campaign Aspatria were content to secure a mid-table finish in the Regional 2 North league.  However, in games against the top half sides, the Black Reds invariably came off second-best.

Head Coach, Mike Scott, at the recent Players Presentation Evening, made it clear that this was not good enough and demanded more from his charges.

Scott may now have the firepower to deliver on his ambitions with the announcement of new arrivals at Bower Park.

The first to sign was an old face in a welcome return for powerhouse forward, Matthew Atkinson.

Atkinson left Aspatria 12 months ago to sign for Scottish Premiership side Jed-Forest, fulfilling a career ambition to play rugby at the highest level.  This aim achieved, the returning Atkinson will undoubtedly add firepower to Aspatria’s pack.

Also signed is Lewis Barwise as the young West Cumbrian based flanker joins Aspatria from Carlisle.

The city club endured relegation last season but the high-octane performances of Barwise were noted by several opponent clubs and Aspatria were elated that he chose to pursue his rugby ambitions at Bower Park.

Former Cockermouth utility back, Mark Watson has also signed.  Watson is a highly regarded player whose pace and guile can only be an asset, wherever he is asked to play in Aspatria’s back division.

Aspatria have also opted to enter their Eagles side in the Cumbria County League, following the example of Keswick and Penrith who have both entered reserve sides in the competition.

This is an official RFU Level 7 league and will pitch these reserve teams against some tough opposition with games against established clubs such as Carlisle, Wigton and Whitehaven.

Pre-season training is now in full swing at Bower Park. New players and those returning to the game are most welcome particularly those who want to play their rugby on a local basis with the Eagles.  Details of pre-season fixtures will be announced shortly.
