Cumbrian business brings out everyone’s inner Ken-ergy with new candle in time for Barbie movie

A Cumbrian candle and wax melt business is bringing out everyone’s inner Ken-ergy with its new candle.

Fiction Wicks, owned by Sophie McCall, 23, of Carlisle, launched the candle after being inspired by the buzz around the new highly anticipated Barbie movie hitting cinema screens.

Sophie said: “The Ken-ergy candle is inspired by the Barbie movie, but specifically from an interview with Ryan Gosling about his role as Ken in the movie.

“I really wanted to create something inspired by Barbie and found that quote hilarious, so after a few iterations, that’s what I came up with.”

Gosling has used the buzzword in several interviews promoting the movie, but has remained coy about it’s real meaning – with some people saying the term was coined on set to describe his masculine energy in the film.

Bright pink in colour, the candle’s packaging also references some of the movie’s marketing.

Sophie added: “The label on this candle is actually very unique for Fiction Wicks. Typically I only create black and white so everything matches, but I couldn’t do Barbie without pink!

“The blue and pink combo is inspired by advertising material created a few months ago, and it’s so different to any of our other candles. It’s floral scented just like a Barbie dreamhouse should be.”

The candle can be bought as a large or medium jar or a wax melt and has been selling out regularly every time it is restocked.

Sophie first set up Fiction Wicks during the first COVID-19 lockdown.

She said: “Myself and my sister came up with the name whilst hiking in the Lake District. We really wanted something that had a ring to it, so we went through several different versions before we launched.

“All my candles and wax melts are inspired by books, movies and TV shows. I love finding ways to make my candles fit popular culture, like our The Stones candle being inspired by the infinity gauntlet that Thanos wears in the Marvel movies.”

Sophie’s candles are also vegan and made of soy wax and the fragrances she uses are cruelty free.

She said: “I chose to use soy wax for my candles because it provides the same scent throw as paraffin, whilst also creating a lot less smoke. Which is perfect for people with sensitive lungs.

“Using vegan ingredients also means that my vegan friends and customers can use my products without worry. My fragrances are also cruelty free because I’m personally against animal testing.”
