Carlisle United continued their successful pre-season programme with a 2-0 win over Newcastle United Under-21s at the Gateshead International Stadium.
An own goal and a late finish from Ryan Edmondson gave United another win as they remain unbeaten so far.
The other good news for Carlisle was that Owen Moxon returned to the starting line-up after being troubled by a hip injury.
Newcastle goalkeeper Max Thompson, an England Under-18 international, made two early stops holding Edmondson’s low drive inside the box before blocking Jon Mellish’s fierce drive with his leg.
The promising teenage keeper, who has been with Newcastle since he was 11, then made another two good stops in quick succession as United enjoyed the majority of possession.
He held onto Callum Guy’s curling effort from the edge of the area but was less troubled by Jordan Gibson’s speculative effort from distance.
Midfielder Nathan Carlyon created Newcastle’s first chance but dragged a low effort from the edge of the box wide of the mark after some tidy build-up.
Carlisle broke the deadlock in fortunate circumstances after 19 minutes when Gibson’s low ball was flicked by Edmondson before taking a crucial deflection off defender Michael Ndiweni and it trickled into the net.
Gibson was lively and heavily involved for Carlisle testing Thompson with one effort and then striking the post with a ferocious drive.
Newcastle began the second-half brightly and substitute Dylan Charlton, saw a dangerous cross turned behind for a corner by Paul Huntington, who had started his career at Newcastle’s Academy.
However Newcastle substitute keeper Will Brown made two very good stops to deny Gibson and Moxon to restrict the United lead to a single goal.
Newcastle made four more substitutions and one of them James Huntley almost made an immediate impact. He got on the end of a cross only to see his header saved by Tomas Holy.
Carlisle scored their second goal in the 89th minute when Edmondson slid home a Jack Armer cross beyond Brown.
