Kendal Wasps rugby team are hosting an open training session to encourage women to find their warrior spirit and give rugby a try.

The free session will take place at Kendal RFU on Sunday August 20 from 2pm to 5pm and all women aged 16-plus are invited to attend.

Coaches and experienced players will be on hand to teach attendees the very basics of rugby, including passing, kicking and tackling, using skills games alongside some fitness drills. There will also be a tour of the club’s state-of-the-art facilities.

The event is designed to be a fun introduction to rugby for those who have never tried the sport and inspire returning players to put their boots back on.

Team manager India Brennan said: “Following a phenomenal season, the atmosphere amongst the Wasps is unstoppable. It’s really exciting to see everyone’s enthusiasm for sharing the positivity and growing the team.

“With players of all levels, a competitive 1st XV and a fun, pressure-free development squad, there has never been a better time to give rugby a go.”

Kendal’s women’s team was formed in 2012 and last season made club history by going unbeaten in the women’s NC1 North league. This incredible success has earned the Wasps promotion to Women’s Championship North 2.

Now, as part of their player development pathway, the Wasps are looking to significantly increase the number of women attending training to support formation of a second team.

The development team will provide new and less experienced players with the opportunity to play at a lower level and help accelerate the women’s game in Cumbria.

Team coach Sophie Hicks said: “Warrior Camp is the best place for experienced players to blow away the cobwebs on their skills and for anyone new to rugby to come and see what it’s all about!

“The squad are keen to welcome women of all ages and abilities from across Kendal and the surrounding areas to show what the club has to offer and the brilliant team you can be part of.

“So come down take part, ask questions and most of all enjoy yourself. It could be the best thing you do this year.”

Anyone wishing to attend can register on Eventbrite at Kendal Women’s Rugby ‘Inner Warrior’ Taster Session
