Emergency full road closure put in place on A593

An emergency road closure has been put in place on the A593.

The whole A593 is closed until next week for the safety of all road users to allow for the repair of a damaged culvert at Skelwith affected by a water main.

It is due to a suspected burst pipe linked to water works carried out earlier this year.

Upon assessment by Westmorland and Furness Highways earlier yesterday, significant damage to a culvert has been found which requires extensive repair works.

A signed diversion route is in place via the B5285 and B5286 from Coniston to Clappersgate via Hawkshead Hill.

The team are currently obtaining replacement pipe which is due to be delivered on Monday 7 August.

The road is set to be closed for a further five days, but the full extent of the remedial works will be established following further inspections next week.

Councillor Peter Thornton, Westmorland and Furness Council Cabinet Member for Highways and Assets said: “We recognise the inconvenience this unforeseen road closure will cause and appreciate the patience and understanding of the local community, businesses and road users as our teams do all they can to repair the damaged culvert.

“Safety remains our concern and we assure you that we are committed to restoring full access to the A593 at the earliest possible time.”
