The Premier League might be kicking off this weekend, but in West Cumbria there’s equal anticipation about the launch of a new Sunday League.
The Workington and Egremont Sunday leagues have merged to form the West Cumberland Sunday League.
A potential merger was first brought to the attention of Cumberland FA in July 2022, with the west-based leagues keen to support their teams and futureproof Sunday football for their players.
Following a number of initial meetings with the respective leagues, actions were agreed to explore the possibility of the merger.
Excitement is now building as the division structure and start date for the West Cumberland Sunday League has been confirmed for this Sunday.
Nine teams will contest the Premier Division with 10 competing in Division One.
In the top flight are: Blue Bell, Moresby, Deer Orchard, Parkside, Dearham, Lowca, Northside, FC Cosmos, Thornhill.
Division 1 is made up of: Flimby, Senhouse, Salterbeck, Kings Arms, Seaton, The Sun, FC Butchers, Swan Inn, Royal Oak, Sun Inn.
Ray Sempill, Cumberland FA’s football development officer, said: “We are very pleased with the outcome of this process. The overall number of Sunday teams in West Cumbria has increased by two from last season.
“With 19 teams entered, the management committee were able to put together what look like two evenly matched divisions.
“We are looking forward to getting kicked off this Sunday, and we would like to wish all the teams luck for the season.”
Workington League has always been afternoon games with Egremont playing in the mornings, but the new league will play every Sunday at 11am.
