Morpeth Town boost squad ahead of new season

Morpeth Town, who host Workington Reds in their first mid-week game on Tuesday, have boosted their squad ahead of the new season.

Sam Hodgson and Will Jenkins will make loan  moves from South Shields to Craik Park until January 2024.

Hodgson, 21, came through the Mariners’ Academy and made his mark on the first team during the 2021/22 season and has made 24 appearances and scored nine goals for his parent club.

The forward has also enjoyed loan spells at Stockton Town, Marske United and also National League North side Blyth Spartans.

Meanwhile, Jenkins will also ply his trade for the Highwaymen for next season.

The 21-year-old midfielder featured for Dunston on loan in the Northern Premier League East Division last season, making ten appearances.

During his short stay at The Fed, Jenkins snapped up both the Supporter’s Player of the Year award and Young Player of the Season award.

On his new acquisitions, Morpeth Town boss Craig Lynch said: “We are delighted to bring in both Sam and Will to the club.

“Sam, more so than Will, has played against us a couple of times for South Shields and Marske and scored some key goals against us which he can now recreate in a Morpeth shirt.

“He’s a number nine that we’re delighted to bring in; we’ve waited patiently for someone like Sam to come up. If he does half as well as the last Sam Hodgson who played for us, he will be a great addition to the team.

“Will is someone we’ve kept a close eye on over the last year with his loan at Dunston. He won awards for a team who got close to the play-offs in the league below so the next step in his development is to play regularly at our level which I think he will have no problem doing.

“Signings five and six this summer again fit the profile we’ve looked to bring in and we can’t wait to see them play for us this season.

“Many thanks to South Shields for trusting and allowing the two lads to continue their development with us this season.”

Morpeth start their season with a long trip today to Basford United.
