Carlisle United are still searching for their first win in League Pone and are now in the bottom four after a 1-0 defeat at Port Vale.
Their hosts had conceded seven goals in the opening game of the season and since then have won three and drawn one to improved dramatically up the table.
Carlisle need to record that elusive first win for a confidence boost and although manager Paul Simpson feels his present group are capable of scoring goals he is pursuing a new striker before the transfer window closes.
The only goal of the game came early in the second-half when Vale were awarded a penalty.
James Wilson’s second-half penalty handed improving Port Vale a hard-earned victory against Carlisle.
Carlisle keeper Jokull Andresson, on his debut, tugged back Ethan Chislett in the box and Wilson calmly slotted the spot kick home for a 50th minute winner.
The hosts had controlled the early stages of the game before Carlisle started to get a foothold before half-time.
Nathan Smith and Wilson both went close for the home side while Owen Moxon fired just over the top following a clever set-up from Callum Guy.
The best effort on target was from Guy who really got hold of one from distance and Vale keeper Connor Ripley did really well to beat it away.
Vale thought they had taken the lead just before the break when Chislett found the net only to be denied by an offside decision.
Alex Iacovitti lashed a shot just over for Vale when he should have done better and the final chance fell to Carlisle but Sean Maguire headed Jack Armer’s cross just wide.
