Jackie Dobson and son Owen with their latest Amalgamation winner.

For the second week in a row the West Cumbria Amalgamation enjoyed a good race from Cannock.

It was only the second time, however, that the birds had raced on the traditional Saturday because of weather conditions as Fridays, a Sunday and Mondays had been used previously.

The birds were liberated at 11am in a light north east wind and made good time back home.

Leading the way in the West Cumberland Federation and the Amalgamation were the Dobsons from Cleator Moor who have been flying really well with their young birds.

Their latest winner is a grizzle hen who has started showing form over the last two weeks.

On the sire’s side she’s through birds the partnership bought off Keith Rafferty when he retired from the sport. It was a Van den Bulkke/Heremans cross and there also bloodlines from the P and D Stud in West Bromwich and Pit Bull lines.

The dam is from Angwin Lofts in Cornwall out of Rambo/New Kittle lines.

Jackie Dobson said: “I would like to say a big thank you to convoyer John McNichol and race controller Neil Buchanan for a very good race. The birds tippled in.”

The winner was clocked by the Dobsons at 1.37pm, covering the 140 miles at just under 54 mph.

Richard Martindale, George ‘Pal’ Lawman and loft helper David Fitzwilliam.

David Harrison and son won Egremont Rangers with a blue cock that was second club and eleventh Fed last week.

He was bred in the race loft with his sire being 1st Amal from Cannock last year and his dam being full sister to three Amal winners for David. The main bloodlines are Tony Ali’s via a good friend Tommy Lawrenson  of South Shields and Kevin Johnson of Gateshead.

The Derwent Valley Federation was again won by Richard Martindale and George ‘Pal’ Lawman of Workington Victoria who were also second and fourth.

After a slow start to the young bird season, when their birds had been off colour Richard and ‘Pal’ have hit form again.

They got three together and also managed fourth spot on the Federation sheet.

It was only the second time that the West Cumbria Amalgamation young birds had raced on the traditional Saturday because of weather conditions and Fridays, a Sunday and Mondays had been used previously.

The birds were liberated at 11am in a light north east wind and made good time back home with the Workington Victoria loft clocking at 1.46pm.

They had covered the 148 miles at 53mph.

First bird over the pad was bred by David ‘Sugar’ Wilson from one of his Euro cocks paired to a hen the Workington partnership had loaned him.

Second was an A ring bred in the loft off a previous winner of the big money A ring race which was from Adrian Leech.

The third bird back was bred by a good friend Juan Castello-Mari of Huddersfield.

Winning for the second week in a row in the Workington Social Limit club were Chris Wilson and Martin Johnston.

The chequer pied hen gave Chris Wilson and Martin Johnston a second successive win in Workington Social club.

They only had eight away, got them all and as well as winning their club, also picked up the ring scheme prize in Workington Victoria.

Their winner is a chequer pied hen, whose sire is a Dirk Van den Bulck off the McLuckie brothers while the dam is from Louella Pigeon World, also a Van den Bulck through Kittel lines.

Copeland North West members raced from Worcester and the club was won by Graham Best of Workington with the same hen that won the Workington Social Limit club from Charnock Richard.

She was fifth section and 21st open flying at least 31 miles further than any other bird.

A £100 special prize for this week-end’s race from Cheltenham has been donated by Colin and Sylvia Davidson in memory of John Davidson.

It will go to the loft which clocks the first cock bird in the race.
