Kendal Town suffered a double whammy on Saturday – beaten in the FA Vase and knocked off the top of the North West Counties Premier Division table.
The Mintcakes crashed 6-4 at home to Newcastle University and Wythenshawe hammered Squire’s Gate 7-0 to take over at the top of the table.
It was the first time this season that they have not been top but they are only second on goal difference and have a game in hand of Wythenshawe.
Chairman Michael O’Neill said: “The league is our priority and we are at home to Squire’s Gate on Tuesday night so I hope we can get back into winning ways again.
“Because on Saturday we have a really big game at Wythenshawe Town who are fifth in the table.”
O’Neill was offering no excuses for Kendal’s FA Vase exit as the students earned their place in Monday’s draw.
“The reports we had suggested that we should be able to take care of them if we performed. But they were fit, fast and played better than we did.
“Although we did rally in the later stages the university side deserved their win and we wish them all the best for the rest of the competition.”
The university side, mid-table in Division Two of the Northern League, got off to a flier with a goal on four minutes from Ben Miller and a second after 11 minutes from James Matthews.
Rob Wilson pulled one back for the Mintcakes on 18 minutes from the penalty spot but Matthews’ second on 34 minutes and one from Stephen Pennington on the stroke of half-time gave the University a 4-1 lead at the break.
Two minutes after the restart it got worse when Miller grabbed his second before Kendal threatened a fight-back with goals from James Bailey (62) and Bailey Kenney (83).
But Tolu Osiyema grabbed a sixth on 84 minutes and Brandon Croskell-Robinson’s goal in the last minute was just a statistical addition for Kendal.
