Contractors are set to start work to resurface the A66 in Cumbria next week in a five-week project.

A section from the A66 junction for Threlkeld to Greta Bridge, close to Keswick is being resurfaced and road markings and studs replaced by National Highways.

Work will be carried out overnight between 8pm and 6am and a convoy system will be in place for traffic to be escorted through the roadworks.

National Highways Project Manager William Paterson said:  “This will allow us to work on sections of the road at a time, so the road can stay open, and traffic can keep moving.”

However, on a small number of occasions, some of the side roads onto the A66, between Threlkeld junction and Greta Bridge, will need to be closed. A local diversion route will be clearly signed when any closure is in place.

He added:  “Additionally, when we’re working between the Threlkeld junctions, we may need to close one junction to prevent ‘rat running’ through the village.

“While we are doing all we can to keep traffic flowing as smoothly as possible, we’d like to apologise in advance for any inconvenience our work may cause and are grateful for people’s ongoing support and co-operation while this takes place.”

During the first week of work, National Highways will work Monday to Friday nights. After that, the surfacing will take place Sunday to Thursday, with work on road markings to be carried out on Friday night.

The programme is subject to change should weather conditions be unsuitable to carry out the work.
