Barrow went down 3-1 at Morecambe last night in their EFL Trophy clash when Pete Wild fielded a much-changed side.
Morecambe had opened the scoring through Charlie Brown on 38 minutes before one of their youngsters Cameron Rooney doubled the advantage 13 minutes into the second half.
Ben Whitfield pulled one back for the Bluebirds on 68 minutes before Cammy Smith clinched it with a third for Morecambe five minutes later.
The deadlock had been broken through Brown after Rooney threaded a clever ball through he him and he calmly slotted the ball beyond Josh Lillis for his first Morecambe goal.
It could have been 2-0 five minutes later but Lillis produced a fine save at close range to deny Smith.
Another Lillis save, this time a fairly straight forward one to deny Jacob Davenport, ended the half.
The visitors had a big chance to go level early in the second half after winning a free kick in a promising position, but Dom Telford’s effort was struck much too high.
Just before the hour Mark Rooney doubled the home lead, He was quickest to react and poke home a ball that was whipped dangerously into the box.
Barrow gave themselves a lifeline with just over 20 minutes left when a corner from Whitfield appeared to curl straight in without anyone getting a touch.
The Bluebirds looked as though they would level right after but David Worrall’s back post header could only find the side netting.
Barrow’s crucial miss was punished seconds later at the other end by Smith. A ball into the box was not properly cleared and Smith had a simple task of netting.
