Workington Reds’ game could have gone either way

Jim Atkinson (Ben Challis)

Workington went down 1-0 last night at Warrington Rylands in a an open, even game which could have gone either way.

Reds had to survive a penalty scare when Scott Bakkor tried to be clever and beat Jim Atkinson with a Panenka spot kick and only succeeded in hitting the bar.

That had come on 61 minutes when Keelan Leslie was adjudged to have fouled the home player when he slid in with a tackle.

The only goal of the game came on 77 minutes when Matt Regan was free at the far post to head home a corner.

Reds had gone closest in the first-half when Kofi Moore got on the end of a Conor Tinnion cross and saw his header come back off the bar. Steve Rigg trying to get in on the rebound put shot over the top.

Throughout the game Reds defended very well, and Atkinson, as well as handling confidently, pulled off a couple of very good saves. Rigg, on a good run of form, worked hard as usual up top.

Reds have another tough away day on Saturday when they travel to Matlock Town and hopefully might have Dav Symington back in the firing line.
