Beckermet pub and hotel set to be converted into two houses

The owner of a Beckermet pub and hotel is looking to convert the venue into housing.

Plans have been lodged to transform The Royal Oak Hotel, on Nursery Road, into two houses, featuring up to three bedrooms each.

The hotel has several rooms including single, double, twin, king and family sizes as well as a restaurant, bar and village shop that was created during a recent refurbishment.

A public callout was made earlier this year looking for someone to manage the restaurant side of the venue by a Manchester businessman looking to take over the whole enterprise. Plans now appear to have fallen through.

Mr Joe Richards – who took over ownership of the pub in 2021 after it had closed for two years – has submitted the application seeking to change the space to Cumberland Council.

A planning and heritage statement submitted by Planning by Design on behalf of Mr Richards said the proposed houses would enhance housing choice and contribute to the vitality of the area.

It added that the development would not have a detrimental visual impact on the area or threaten or detract from the distinctive characteristics of Beckermet.

If successful, the houses would also share three car parking spaces and waste storage and have separate back gardens.

Beckermet with Thornhill Parish Council have submitted no comments or objections to the application.
