
This month’s Armistice Day and Remembrance Sunday are being marked at several events across Cumbria.
Led by the Royal British Legion, these include a Festival of Remembrance at St Cuthbert’s Church in Carlisle tomorrow, Friday November 10.
Tickets are free and are available from the Carlisle Tourist Information Centre. Doors open 6.30pm and it starts at 7pm.
Remembrance events – wreath laying and parades – are being held in towns including Aspatria, Barrow, Brampton, Cleator Moor, Cockermouth, Egremont, Kendal, Keswick, Maryport, Millom, Penrith, Ulverston, Whitehaven, Wigton and Workington.
Cumberland Council’s Civic Centre, Court Square and the Citadels in Carlisle, The Beacon in Whitehaven and Allerdale House in Workington are lit red at night during the run-up to Sunday and the Union flag will be flown outside Cumbria House, the Civic Centre and the Old Town Hall in Carlisle, the Copeland Centre in Whitehaven and Allerdale House in Workington on Armistice Day and Remembrance Sunday.
Westmorland and Furness Council has also illuminated Kendal Town Hall and Penrith Town Hall will be illuminated red, and Barrow Town Hall will be illuminated in the colours of the Union flag as a tribute to all the service men and women who have lost their lives in times of conflict.
The council is also displaying the symbolic red poppy on many of its buildings, libraries, care homes and vehicles to show support for the armed forces community.
