Workington’s Les Blacklock and wife Meryl attended the Annual Animals in War Gathering took at the National AiW memorial, Brook Gate, Park Lane, London.
Les was in his capacity as President of the RPRA, a prestigious position he has held on three different occasions – 2008 to 2011, 2015 to 2018 and 2021 to 2024.
“Meryl and myself have attended for the past two years and this year there were a total of 27 Animal Charities/organisations present for the event.
“After the one minutes silence was observed, Cath Bourg, organiser of the event, from the Pet Plan Charitable trust, made the announcement that this year was the 80th anniversary of the Dicken Medal first being awarded to Animals.
“Since then 38 Dogs have received the award, 32 Pigeons, four horses and one cat. Cath then invited five speakers to the Memorial steps. Each was to read an example of how Animals were awarded the Dicken Medal.
The five speakers were from the PDSA, Royal Army Veterinary college , RAF Dog Inspectorate, Brough Scott MBE broadcaster and journalist plus the RPRA’s own Mike Armitage representing Pigeons in War, who has been a big supporter of the cause right from the start.
“All the examples were outstanding, and Mike spoke with passion about the humble pigeon and related the exploits of White Vision in helping to save a downed aircraft crew.”
There then followed the laying of the wreaths with over 30 laid. Following the wreath laying, Mike Armitage was invited to step forward and release two white pigeons, assisted by the director of the PDSA.
Les added: “It was again a very moving occasion and among the celebrities in attendance were the author Jilly Cooper and the actor Derek Jacobi.
“Personally I would like to thank all concerned for organising and taking part in this year’s event.”
