Cumberland FA have set up a special fund in memory of their late chairman Fred Conway.

The fund will see a percentage of disciplinary money being ring fenced to provide practical financial support to those in Cumberland football who are in need.

Contributions will be based around four key areas: Benevolent, Wellbeing, Hardship and Excellence.

The County explained the four categories as:-

1. Benevolent – Providing support to assist with the loss of family member through donations and towards memorials etc., recovery from an injury incurred whilst playing/officiating within football (not covered through existing PA insurance or in addition e.g. additional physio sessions, specialist equipment etc), or financial hardship incurred due to ill health/treatment.

2. Wellbeing – Assisting clubs providing direct assistance to individuals/groups through intervention programmes and/or counselling etc.

3. Hardship – Working with clubs to contribute towards reducing barriers to getting involved or staying involved in grassroots football for those individuals with less or no disposable income e.g. kit and equipment, fees, trips and tours etc.

4. Excellence – Supporting individuals who are selected to play or officiate at a regional or national level of football e.g. disability specific clubs/teams, England teams, refereeing, etc.

Cumberland FA CEO Ben Snowdon said: “We are delighted to launch The Fred Conway Fund on what would be a year since his death.

“The fund includes a number of specific areas which Fred was extremely passionate about and dedicated a lot of his time and effort towards whilst he was involved in the game.

“Before his passing he was pushing the county to set up a fund that would look to assist clubs and more specifically individuals at such a challenging time for so many people.

“The County will look to use income brought in through the disciplinary system to make contributions of mainly smaller amounts of between £100 to £500, although we will consider an increased contribution with exceptional circumstances.”

More details about the scheme and the application process will be revealed soon.
