Workington ended a run of three straight defeats with an excellent 3-0 win at Basford United to complete a double over the Nottinghamshire side.
Reds had won 5-3 at Borough Park earlier in the season and had more in hand on this occasion.
It could have been more as young Kitt Nelson fired a great effort against the post just after Reds had gone 3-0 ahead while earlier skipper Conor Tinnion had a penalty saved.
Delighted manager Danny Grainger said afterwards: “I’m over the moon with this performance. I have given the lads some criticism over the last few weeks because we haven’t been good enough.
“But I thought every single one of them was tremendous today. We defended our box like our lives depended on it and the clean sheet gives great satisfaction.
“I always believe we have players in the team who will score goals and we scored three good ones today which is very pleasing.”
Reds had gone ahead after 36 minutes when a short corner was played to Kitt Nelson and a perfect cross was headed home by Steven Rigg.
It was a deserved lead to take into the break and Reds didn’t have to wait long for their second in the second half.
Two minutes after the restart Dav Symington had a chance to take aim from 12 yards and he made no mistake to double the Reds lead.
It could have been 3-0 on 70 minutes when Rigg was bundled over in the box as he prepared to shot. Tinnion took responsibility but the home keeper pulled off a fine save to deny him.
The third goal did arrive, however, on 86 minutes when a long ball over the top from Ceiran Casson was superbly controlled by Symington before finishing with aplomb.
It’s a 200 mile journey but it would seem a fair bit shorter on the way back for the Workington players, officials and supporters.
