Carlisle’s Tullie will close from Christmas Eve until next summer for a major revamp.
Work includes a new entrance and welcome area, plus a new ground-floor gallery and is the second phase of the Project Tullie overhaul of the museum and art gallery.
The first phase was the Costume Collection galleries, which opened in 2021.
Originally opening to the public on November 8 1893, Carlisle’s Tullie museum and gallery is celebrating its 130th birthday this month. Since 2011, the museum has operated as an independent charitable trust.
This latest development is funded by the Government, including support from the Government’s Town’s Fund and Future High Streets Fund.
Once this stage of redevelopment is completed, Tullie will have a revitalised and more accessible entrance and atrium space and a new ground floor gallery dedicated to the Great Border City.
The Digging Deeper: Uncovering Roman Carlisle exhibition is now being extended until December 23 and the museum has two weekends of Christmas fun planned.
The museum will offer to extend all annual purchases of admission tickets or membership through the closure period.
