
Two Cumbrian Halifax branches are set to close, it has been revealed.
Whitehaven and Penrith are among over 60 branches earmarked for closure by the brand, part of the Lloyds Banking Group.
The Halifax said: “The world is becoming more digital than ever before and more of our customers are doing their everyday banking online. With more
customers banking digitally, we’ve seen a fall in branch visits.”
Penrith’s branch will close on March 19 and Whitehaven’s branch will close on April 9.
It said 70 customers used the Penrith branch, on Middlegate, regularly in 2023, with the majority of customers aged 55 to 74. It said transactions had fallen by 61 per cent over the past five years and cash machine usage by 41 per cent.
It added that 34 per cent of Penrith customers have also used other branches; 75 per cent have used other branches, online banking or telephone banking and 24 per have also used the Post Office.
Penrith’s Lloyds bank is also set to close next year.
Whitehaven’s King Street branch sees 169 customers use it regularly, with the majority of customers aged 35 to 74.
It said transactions had fallen by 47 per cent over the past five years and cash machine usage by 29 per cent.
It added that 31 per cent of Whitehaven customers have also used other branches; 77 per cent have used other branches, online banking or telephone banking and 21 per have also used the Post Office.
