A seal pup – found on a West Cumbrian beach – has been released back into the wild.
The pup was spotted at the beach near Mawbray over the new year weekend and was being monitored by wildlife rescue charity Ani-Mel Haven.
This little common seal pup was starting to head towards the road and there were concerns for its safety, so Ani-Mel took it to Millcroft Vets.
The vets gave the pup a health check and weigh it. One of the vets is also a marine mammal medic and spoke to British Divers Marine Life Rescue for advice.
Its weight was okay for its size, it had no signs of disease and no major injuries so was thought that it was probably tired after the recent stormy weather.
The pup was fed electrolytes and glucose by a stomach tube and was left to sleep undisturbed.
By the morning it was much brighter so after another feed, British Divers Marine Life rescue arranged for volunteer medic Andrew Stanley and his daughter Kaitlin to collect and release it.
Andrew videoed the seal’s release into the sea.
