
Carlisle Rugby Union Club has announced the deaths of two women who were married to Warwick Road stalwarts.
Mavis MacFadzean was the wife Dr Craig MacFadzean, club player, Hornets captain for many years in the 1970s and 80s, doctor, officer and club supporter for many years.
She was also often a visitor at the club with Craig although latterly they had moved south but kept in touch on a regular basis.
The club said that Mavis died aged 81 and their heartful sympathies go to Craig, his son Bruce and all the family.
Mavis’s funeral is at Cheltenham Crematorium, Willow Chapel on Friday, January 12 at 10.30am. Family flowers only requested, but donations for Alzheimer’s Research UK may be given online at www.masonandstokes.co.uk or sent c/o Mason & Stokes, 54 Hewlett Road, Cheltenham GL52 6AH.
The death has also been announced of Joan Bewley, 71, who was the wife of former player and long-time club coach Mike Bewley who died a number of years ago.
Mike is remembered at the Carlisle club through the annual Mike Bewley Award for Services to Rugby and the Mike Bewley Memorial Match versus Penrith RUFC.
The club said: “In recent years Joan was a regular attendee at these events and it was always a pleasure to see her. The bench and tree in the club’s beer garden are also memorials to Mike, reflecting the input he and his family gave to the club.
“Mavis’s sudden passing is a shock and we send condolences to Marcus, Nikola and Ben and the wider family.”
Joan’s funeral service will be at St Paul’s Church, Holme Eden, Warwick Bridge, Carlisle on Monday January 15 at 2pm, followed by private cremation.
